Two medals for Canada at junior Grand Prix figure skating competition

“It was a tough field but still I was hoping to finish a bit higher”

- Canada’s Amanda Velenosi and Mark Fernandez won the silver medal in pairs at a Junior Grand Prix figure skating meet on Saturday.

Joanna Lenko and Mitchell Islam of Barrie, Ont., added a bronze in ice dancing.

In pairs, Ekaterina Sheremetieva and Mikhail Kuznetsov of Russia won the gold with 127.69 points. Velenosi, from Laval, Que., and Montreal’s Fernandez, who joined forces last season, remained in second with 125.36 while China’s Yue Zhang and Lei Wang were third at 123.77.

“Our free skate didn’t go as well as expected but our result held so we’re pleased about that,” Fernandez said. “We made a few little mistakes but we landed our throw triple toe which was a big highlight after missing it in the short. We definitely wanted to go back out there and do it better.” Read more
